Is Auto Insurance Cheaper for Women?

There first thing that comes to mind for most men when it comes to women driving is their horrible driving skills. They picture images of their wife driving down the road texting, putting on makeup or some other hazardous activity. This opinion tends to upset women because in most cases it is untrue.

If you look at the statistics, women have much fewer accidents than men. This is because women in general are safer when behind the wheel of a vehicle. When you get down to the brass tacks, around 80% of auto accidents occur because there is a male driver at fault. When it comes to the accidents that women do have, there are fewer incidences of injury, death and property damage than those involving men. For insurers this translates into lower costs to them.

Since women make fewer auto insurance claims each year, insurance companies stand to save more money in claims payouts when it comes to women drivers. Insurance agencies want to attract more women drivers so they will often pass a percentage of the savings on to them through reduced rates. While this may seem biased to some people, women are actually getting a discount because they are good drivers. This doesn’t mean that all women have cheaper insurance. Those women who are bad drivers must pay higher premiums just like others who are.

Why are women better drivers than men? It has a little to do with their nature. Women are usually more careful than men when it comes to everything. In fact most women could be considered to be overcautious. Women are less prone to make dangerous or careless maneuvers on the road. They are also less prone to get behind the wheel after they have had an alcoholic beverage. Women drive more for transportation than to show off.
